    About Howick Historical Village:

    Howick Historical Village (HHV) is owned and operated by the Howick & Districts Historical Society as a key visitor attraction that tells the story of Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland.  The Society is managed as a not-for-profit entity with full charitable status.  Please see historicalvillage.org.nz for more about HHV.

    Purpose of the role:  

    Howick Historical Village is going through an exciting time with a new vision and purpose following the implementation of our new Strategic Plan, available at: https://www.historicalvillage.org.nz/reports. We are looking for an Educator with teaching certification to bring their unique style and out of the box thinking to our dedicated and passionate Education team.

    There is also an opportunity to work with the Visitor Services team at the front desk one Saturday per month. The successful Educator candidate is not required to take on this role, but it is an additional available position. Please see the end of the Educator job description for more information!

    Educator job description:

    This is a casual role, working with a team of Educators to provide a memorable learning experience for school groups and visitors using classroom-based teaching. The primary focus is to make the best use of our unique historical environment to deliver education in a practical, hands-on, and actively enjoyable way.  All our Educators have teaching credentials, which allows us to offer a well-rounded, professionally managed experience.

    About the role

    • To facilitate an education programme, including planning, development, and implementation of schools, public, and outreach programmes.

    • To help in designing curriculum and educational material.

    • To support Education Manager and team with the administration of the Education Department’s operations - keeping records and data up to date relating to school visits.

    • To gain an understanding of the mid-19th century period of Auckland history, particularly the Fencible story through training and reading materials.  Our current programmes focus on the arrival to Auckland of the Fencibles, an on-call defense force, from England and Ireland, beginning in 1847.

    • To assist with the creation and delivery of the holiday programme.

    • Adhere to all health and safety procedures.

    • Collaborate with educators to create a cohesive programme that supports their needs and requirements, particularly around the refreshed New Zealand curriculum.

    • Work as part of a team to deliver formal and informal learning activities across the Museum and as outreach (if required)

    • To work with colleagues across HHV to develop effective multi-site approaches to learning, engagement, access, and participation.

    Some flexibility may be necessary to cover holiday events.  Other duties may be assigned from time to time as required by the Education Manager or General Manager.  We are a small team, so flexibility within the role is a must.

    Required:

    • Teaching certification and credentials.

    • Experience working with children.

    • Must return a satisfactory Police Record Check before commencement of employment.

    About you

    • Experience understanding and applying principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and honouring the Treaty of Waitangi, particularly in sharing stories and information connected to Māori culture and heritage.

    • Ability to work well and participate fully in a team environment.

    • Show initiative.

    • Enthusiastic and able to deliver our education programmes to a high standard for all age groups to ensure all tamariki feel inspired.

    Physical Demands

    • To present in period costume to schools and the public in all weathers.

    • Physically able to lift medium and heavy objects and awareness of correct lifting and handling procedures. 

    Visitor Host & Retail Assistant (Casual) job description:

    Job title: Visitor Host

    Reports to: Operations Manager

    Contract: Casual
    Salary: $23.65/hr

     

    Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

    • Welcome visitors and process admissions.

    • Provide a short, historical introduction and overview

    • Engage with and guide visitors as required

    • Respond to enquiries on all aspects of village operations (event and group bookings, venue hire, research inquiries etc) with courtesy and professionalism.

    • Provide attentive, informed service in the shop and champion its products, with the goal to increase revenue for the village.

    • Assist with retail operations – pricing, packaging, ordering, stock management.

    • Provide front of house support for public events such as ‘Meet the Villagers’ Days, Easter, Halloween and Christmas events and presenting activities.

    • Help to maintain village displays and monitor the security of its collections.

    • Ensure the shop and all front of house areas are presentable, tidy and appealing.

     

    Additional Responsibilities:

    • Unlock and lock-up the Village’s facilities and sites

    • Open & close the shop (including cashing up at the end of the day). Ensure end of day reconciliation is correct and any discrepancies are identified, corrected, and/or notified.

    • Prepare materials and oversee craft sessions and other attractions.

    • Present historical demonstrations (such as rope laying, butter-making, wash day)

    • Dress in 19th century costume on weekends and for special events

    • Adhere to the HHV’s health and safety policies and obligations under the HSWA 2015

    • Work co-operatively with other staff and volunteers to maintain a supportive and encouraging working environment.

    You must be eligible to work in New Zealand for either of these roles. If your application moves to the second-round, you must complete an Application Form. If successful, you must pass a police background check prior to commencement.

Internships

Internships are a great way to get hands on real world experience for those studying or working towards a pathway in the museum, heritage or cultural sector.

Howick Historical Village offers internships throughout the year and best suits students or graduates looking to gain experience in the heritage industry. However, other internships within our organisation may be available.
