As part of our Matariki celebrations, the Village comes alive during the school holidays with a full programme of fun, hands-on activities for all ages. Step back in time and experience everyday life from the past alongside costumed guides, with activities including butter making, beeswax candle making, carving, crafts, and traditional games.
A great way to celebrate Matariki through learning, play, and connection, exploring history in an interactive and engaging way for the whole whānau.
Waka carving workshop, Thursdays, 11am–1pm.
Join carver, artist, and cultural facilitator Calvin Devine (Ngāpuhi) for a hands-on, 2-hour whakairo (carving) workshop. Create your own waka hourua (double-hulled canoe) while discovering how Māori navigators used the stars, skies, and an indigenous compass to voyage across the Pacific.
