
He Kakano Ahau | Te reo Māori beginners’ course
This course is designed to teach you basic sentence structures, speaking, writing, mihi, and waiata in order to grow your confidence in the Māori language and understanding of Te ao Māori (the Māori world).
What to Expect
Welcome to He Kakano ahau te reo level 1. This course is designed to teach you basic sentence structures, speaking, writing, mihi, and waiata in order to grow your confidence in the Māori language and understanding of Te ao Māori (the Māori world).
As a student partaking in this course, you will be awarded a certificate of completion which may support your reo journey, level 2 and beyond.

To do your best, and bring your all to the learning space can be challenging without preparation.

Other than your eagerness to learn, as a student you are required to show one form of ID at the beginning of your first session to the course programme leader and fill out the necessary information that we may require of you before you begin your course.
You will need to bring your own notebook and pen to your sessions; however, paper and pencils will be available.
All take home worksheets, learning exercises and or tasks will be provided by the Kaiako and Howick Historical Village during each session.
Light refreshments (biscuits, tea, and coffee) will also be provided, but you are more than welcome to bring your own kai (to be eaten between breaks).

You will be sent an Invoice from Howick Historical Village. All costs and invoices must be paid a week before your first course session

Please drive through the main visitor car park, and down the end into the staff car park area.
If you are catching public transport, there are several bus stops near the Village that offer shelter, seating, computerized timetables and touch-to-speak timetables. Please check the Auckland Transport Website for more information.
Our Programme leader will be at the gate beside Brindle Cottage before your session begins to welcome you in and show you where your class will be held.
