Selwyn Road
Selwyn Road carries the story of Howick’s beginnings.
Originally known as Grey’s Street, this route connects the village to Waipaparoa, Howick Beach. It was along this path that the Fencibles, retired British soldiers and their families, first arrived from Auckland, beginning the settlement that would become Howick
In 1942, the road was renamed to mark 100 years since Bishop George Augustus Selwyn arrived in Aotearoa. As New Zealand’s first Anglican Bishop, he played an important role in shaping early community and church life
His legacy remains at the corner of Picton Street, where All Saints Church still stands. Designed by architect Frederick Thatcher and commissioned by Selwyn, it is the last prefabricated surviving Selwyn Church.
